This is a great photo!
Not only is the subject worth the proverbial 1000 words
(he is in full Union Civil War regalia -
Coles Cavalry, Company D, 1st Regiment, Potomac Home Brigade)
but there is a little detective work that need be undertaken
here.
This is the mystery to be solved:
Andrew Bennett died in 1862 at age 22. This cabinet card photo
was made by James B. Trainor, who established
his studio in 1888.
How is that possible?
No, he's not a ghostly specter!
Most likely, this is a photographic reproduction
probably made from an original cased image.
Just as we make reproductions of family images today,
our ancestors did the same in times gone-by,
updating from the old, to the newest techniques.
Thanks to JoAnn Marshall and Keith Mills for submitting
this picture
and those from the Marks family.
