Baltimore City Nineteenth-Century Photos

Ella May Byer

Miss Ella May Byer

This is a tintype photo in a paper backing.
Mostly tintypes are found without identification
(that's because they often fall out of their paper
support, you can't write on either the front or
back of the photo because it's metal).
This one has three and they don't all agree!

Written just below the embossed paper border
in a very, very faint pencil and beautiful script
(which I can only make out using high
resolution and high contrast scanning)
is, ""Miss Ella May Byer ... ""
There is a second line that might start with
""November"" but it is impossible to make out.

On top of the photo, also in pencil and what appears a much
later addition, is Mae Byer.

Finally, on the back is a modern sticky-note
that reads, "probably Sister of Grand daddy Smoot."

I doubt that Byer and Smoot were siblings, unless maybe
they are half siblings. But, atleast the sticky note
connects the photo to the Smoots in some way.
