Huske ~ Spletter History Page
A little sample of what life was like for SQ's Great-Grandparents before they emigrated from Prussia to Kansas.
Hermann Huske and Josephine Spletter were originally from the area of Posen Prussia.
Excellent Link to Posen Information http://www.posen-l.com/
Prussia has had a turbulent history, becoming part of Germany, becoming part of Poland, at times being overrun by Russia;
in short, getting shuffled around a lot.
At the time Hermann and Josephine lived there, Prussia was under German control and had been for some time.
Their language was German and they claimed German as their nationality and ethnicity.
After WWII, Prussia became, and remains today, a part of Poland. The German placeames are being and have been replaced by Polish names which has made finding historical placenames at times difficult for those of us tracing our heritage. SQ's Great-Aunt Helen and Great-Aunt Ona, (Hermann & Josephine's daughters) recorded the names of the provinces and towns of origin as Hermann & Josephine knew them. Posen is now called Pilska in Polish.
Below is a map of Prussia from around 1865 that has the names as Hermann& Josephine would have known them.Could this be any more dry? I can hear people snoring from here. Punch it up, SQ. Find some celebrities with Prussia ties or famous serial killers from Posen or something...
Josephine's 'hometown' is Augustenaudorf

Another place that figures prominently in the Huske family is Schneidemuhl and Samotchien. There is also a Colmar which may be the "near Kolmar" reference that appears in the notes of several of Hermann & Josephine's descendents.

Hermann's 'hometown' is thought to be Borowa, here is a portion of the Posen map that shows Borowa and I've circled it.
This is just a nice overall map of Posen with a lot of detail.
