History of Wakefield Cathedral - Preface

Preface by John Allen

I am the fourth Provost, thirty ninth Vicar and forty eighth Incumbent of the living of Wakefield. This is a personal view of a building that I love, in which I pray every day and where I and the rest of the Cathedral staff strive to serve all the people of Wakefield and West Yorkshire. We welcome our visitors, and hope that you will join in the many services, concerts, lectures and other events that take place here. Please remember that this is a working building with a job to do. The worship of God is our first priority, closely followed by our calling stand for and foster the unity of all people of Wakefield, of all Christian denominations and of the Church of England Diocese of Wakefield.
If your visit coincides with a service, please feel free to join in, but do not walk round or disturb others who are worshipping if you do not want to join in.
I am grateful to many who have given advice and helped to open my eyes to the beauty and the history of this place, especially Peter Marshall the Cathedral Architect; Harold Speak and Jean Forrester the Cathedral Archivists; John Addy; Ronald Chapman, Churchwarden; Wilfred Moreton, retired tower captain; Jonathan Biebly, Master of the Choristers, and Keith Wright his deputy, and many others.

September 1989 John Allen
