Flanshaw United Reformed Church was built in about 1866 by William Oakes, owner of Oakes Mill near the Church. It was built as a private Chapel, but was later given to the Congregationalists. William Oakes died in November 1871, aged 62 and was buried there. His is the only interment there.
The inscription reads as follows:-
William Oakes
who died
November 25th 1871
Aged 62 years.
"Be ye also ready
for in such an hour
as ye think not the
Son of Man cometh"
The church now houses the oldest organ in Wakefield.
It is a 2 manual Chamber Organ and was built in 1851 by B. Flight of London and is virtually in it's original condition. It is still in regular weekly use for services.

The Parents and Toddlers group are currently trying to obtain a grant to convert the grounds at the rear of the church from an "overgrown mess" to a child friendly area of grass and areas with rubberised coating for use of the toddlers in the summer.
I will keep you informed of what progress is made

The "overgrown mess" has now been cleared - much more ground-space is visible
