Laurie Gant MBE was a local sporting gentleman. Before he retired he ran a thriving shoe repair shop for many years.
He has also been a rugby league player, referree and coach. He was a player for Wakefield Trinity, then transferred to Featherstone Rovers in 1947. While at Featherstone he scored 15 tries and a goal in 112 appearances. He was one of the few (if not the only) persons to have played for, and coached, a team for Wembley's Challenge Cup.
He was team coach in 1967 when Featherstone first won the Challenge Cup. In 1981 he was awarded the MBE for services to the sport. He was aslo a grade one rugby league referee.
Off the field he was also a very active person. He was president of St Michaels Cricket club and the Wakefield branch of thr Royal British Legion.
Laurie died on 19th October 2004, aged 82
