The first record of a Cycling Club in Stanley which I have been able to locate is from a photograph taken outside the Thatched House, Aberford Road. The dress worn by the men was the pre-1914 style, The cycles had the pre-1914 back pedal brakes, phosphor bronze hubs, a 'Challis' bell and the flat handle. The badge was the one used by the Stanley Cycling Club pre-war.
In 1921 a new Cycling Club was formed, the founders being Mr Percy Hartley and Mr George Dale. The new club was named 'Stanley Cycling Club' and they adopted a new badge. It was not often that they cycled less than 100 miles in the day and on special outings in excess of 150 miles.
