The National Coal Mining Museum provides a unique opportunity to travel 140 metres underground down one of Britain's oldest working mines. Experienced local miners guide parties around the underground workings, where models and machinery depict methods and conditions of mining from the early 1800s to the present day.
Your guide underground will be an experienced local miner and you'll see the hidden world
of coal mining from the 1800s to the present day.
The temperature underground is 12oC. We strongly recommend warm practical clothing and flat-
heeled sensible shoes.
Visitors wil be divided into groups of 19 plus the museum guide. We regret that children
under 5 are not allowed underground, but are admitted to the surface. There is an under
5's play area.
The museum has disabled access - underground tours for disabled visitors are available
also by prior arrangement.
There is a museum shop packed with souvenirs from keyrings to miners lamps.
Refreshments are available in the cafe from light snacks to a full traditional Yorkshire
meal.
